Frequently Asked Questions
We want you to make an informed decision before booking your first appointment. So here are some answers to commonly asked questions by our first-time patients.
1
What is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession focused on helping people improve their physical function and mobility through movement, manual therapy, education, and exercise.
2
What should I expect at my first session?
Your first physiotherapy session will begin with a comprehensive assessment. This includes a detailed discussion about your medical history, current symptoms, lifestyle, and goals. Your physiotherapist will then carry out a physical examination — assessing posture, joint movement, muscle strength, flexibility, and functional mobility relevant to your condition.
Based on the findings, your physiotherapist will explain the underlying causes of your problem and discuss appropriate treatment options, which may include manual therapy, exercise prescription, postural correction, or other evidence-based techniques. You will receive a personalised treatment plan, and in many cases, an initial treatment or guided exercises will begin in this first session.
You will leave with a clearer understanding of your condition and practical steps to start your recovery journey.3
What should I wear to physiotherapy
Please wear comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement and visibility of the area being assessed. Please be aware that you might be asked to remove some items of clothing so that clinicians can accurately assess and treat your injury. For example: a bra or sports bra would be appropriate for assessing a shoulder injury on a female patient.
4
Do I need to see my GP first?
No, you do not need to see your GP before coming to physiotherapy. There may be some instances where we make suggestions for further investigations/scans etc. which will be requested from your GP.
5
Do you accept medical insurance?
Yes, we are registered with all of the major medical insurers. You will just require your policy or membership number and your authorisation number prior to commencing your treatment. It is also helpful to know what excess if any apply to your policy.
6
Does Physiotherapy treatment hurt?
No, in general Physiotherapy is not a painful experience. However, during the physical assessment, many of our tests are symptom provoking and so your symptoms can be exacerbated following the first session. This should be mild and clearly explained by the clinician at the time. Some treatment techniques can be uncomfortable but they are generally short lived. Our aim is to make you better, not worse!
7
How many sessions will I need?
It is almost impossible to predict a required number of sessions but, in general, people tend to notice meaningful changes in their symptoms between 2-3 sessions. We will always be upfront with you from the start and will not encourage unnecessary sessions.
